WINE COLLECTION RISK ASSESSMENT & AUTHENTICATION
Independent expertise for the protection of fine wine collections.
Protecting the Value Behind Fine Wine Collections
A valuable wine collection is more than a collection of bottles. It is a carefully built asset where authenticity, provenance, condition, storage and documentation can have a significant impact on value, insurability and long-term preservation.
Pop & Taste Wine Collection Risk Assessment & Authentication provides independent specialist expertise to assess, document and help protect fine wine collections.
Our services are designed for private collectors, insurers, insurance brokers, Private Banks, Wealth Managers and Family Offices requiring specialist knowledge of fine and rare wine.
AUTHENTICATION · PROVENANCE · RISK · DOCUMENTATION
OUR SERVICES
Wine Collection Risk Assessment
A structured assessment of the collection and the environment in which it is stored.
Depending on the scope of the engagement, the assessment may include:
• Collection inventory and identification
• Bottle condition assessment
• Storage condition review
• Identification of high-value bottles
• Identification of higher-risk bottles
• Value concentration analysis
• Photographic documentation
• Review of existing collection records
• Identification of potential vulnerabilities
• Recommendations for improved collection protection
Following the assessment, a Wine Collection Risk Assessment Report can be produced to provide an independent documented overview of the collection and its principal risk factors.
Protecting Fine Wine as a Collectible Asset
A Valuable Collection Requires More Than an Inventory
The value of a fine wine collection depends on far more than producer, vintage and quantity.
Authenticity, provenance, bottle condition, storage history and supporting documentation can all influence the value, marketability and insurability of a collection.
As collections grow in size and value, maintaining accurate information about the assets they contain becomes increasingly important.
A specialist assessment can provide collectors and professional advisers with a clearer understanding of the collection, identify potential vulnerabilities and establish stronger documentation before an acquisition, insurance placement, estate planning decision or potential future claim.
Wine Authentication
Confidence Begins with Authenticity
The presence of rare or high-value bottles within a collection may justify individual authentication. Pop & Taste provides specialist examination of the physical and historical characteristics of fine and rare wine bottles.
Depending on the bottle, the examination may include:
• Bottle and glass characteristics
• Label and printing techniques
• Capsule
• Cork, where technically possible and appropriate
• Fill level
• Production marks and codes
• Producer and vintage consistency
• Historical accuracy
• Evidence of alteration or manipulation
• Comparison with known references
The objective is to identify inconsistencies, anomalies or characteristics that may raise concerns regarding the authenticity of a bottle.
For particularly rare or complex bottles, additional research may be required.
Provenance Assessment
Where Has the Bottle Been?
Provenance is one of the most important considerations when assessing fine and rare wine. A bottle with a well-documented history of ownership, acquisition and storage generally provides greater confidence to collectors, buyers, insurers and future purchasers.
Our provenance assessment may include:
• Acquisition history
• Purchase documentation and invoices
• Auction records
• Ownership history
• Known storage conditions
• Previous bottle movements
• Documentary consistency
• Chain of custody
For particularly important bottles or collections, a more extensive provenance investigation can be undertaken.
Professional Collection Inventory
Know Exactly What You Own
Accurate documentation is one of the foundations of effective wine collection management. Pop & Taste can create, review or update professional collection inventories containing information such as:
Producer
Wine
Vintage
Bottle Size
Quantity
Bottle Condition
Provenance
Storage Location
Indicative Market or Replacement Value
The inventory can also identify the most valuable bottles within the collection and those requiring further authentication or provenance review.
Periodic updates can be performed as bottles are acquired, sold or consumed.
Storage & Environmental Risk
The Cellar Is Part of the Collection
Even an authentic bottle with excellent provenance can lose value when stored under unsuitable conditions. A specialist collection assessment may therefore include an examination of the storage environment.
Factors considered may include:
• Temperature
• Temperature stability
• Humidity
• Light exposure
• Vibration
• Physical security
• Cellar organisation
• Climate-control systems
• Monitoring and alarms
• Water and flooding exposure
• Electrical risks
• Access and bottle-handling procedures
The objective is not simply to protect the wine itself, but to preserve its condition, documentation and future value.
FOR INSURERS & INSURANCE BROKERS
Specialist Wine Collection Risk Support
Fine wine collections present characteristics that distinguish them from conventional household contents and many other collectible assets.
Authentication, provenance, condition and storage can materially affect both the identity and value of individual bottles.
Pop & Taste can provide independent specialist support to insurers and insurance brokers when assessing high-value wine collections.

Wine-related claims can present unusual technical challenges.
Fire, flooding, theft, accidental damage, temperature failure or other events may affect not only the physical condition of the wine but also its provenance, marketability and future value.
